Helping to develop a new higher education institution is one of the most challenging, but rewarding jobs. We are now creating the teaching areas and courses at UCAV and have the luxury of being able to provide purpose-built facilities to meet the needs of differing subjects. We are very excited about the opportunity to create something special in the field of cyber security. A dedicated suite on the first floor of UCAV will host the foundation degree in cyber security, but will also be the site of a range of seminars and short courses in this very topical and important subject. The suite itself will contain a dedicated network to enable students to work on systems without posing a threat to the main building’s ICT infrastructure, but the possibilities that this network could provide go way beyond that. We will be able to simulate a client’s business system and demonstrate its resilience to attack, as well as teaching how to improve that resilience. With ICT security such an important feature of almost every business, we are confident that this will be a well-used facility. Colleagues at Bucks New University and Aylesbury College are meeting regularly to ensure that all of the courses are attractive to students and businesses and that where possible, elements or modules of degree programmes can be studied separately.
